Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment for Hair Loss

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment for Hair Loss

The Breslow Center in Paramus, New Jersey offers PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) hair restoration for both women and men suffering from hair loss or thinning. PRP is a powerful non-surgical treatment for the scalp that harnesses the power of growth factor rich proteins in your own blood to stimulate natural hair growth.

How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?

In PRP therapy, growth factors and other beneficial cells found in the patient’s own blood are reintroduced back into the scalp via injection to promote hair regrowth where hair has been lost or is thinning.

First, the patient’s blood is drawn. It is then put through a centrifuge system to collect the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). PRP is very highly concentrated blood plasma that contains a very high amount of growth factors derived from the platelets as well as bioactive proteins that all work together to help stimulate hair growth.

The PRP is then put into a syringe and injected into the areas of thinning or hair loss.

Benefits of PRP hair restoration treatments:

  • Stimulate natural hair regrowth
  • Decrease hair loss
  • Increase hair density
  • Increase hair thickness

Below are a list of the specific cells within PRP that cause hair growth:

  • Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) — promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication, skin formation
  • Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b) — promotes growth of matrix between cells, bone metabolism
  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) — promotes blood vessel formation
  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) — promotes cell growth and differentiation, blood vessel formation, collagen formation
  • Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2) — promotes growth of specialized cells and blood vessel formation
  • Insulin Like Growth Factor (IGF) — a regulator of normal physiology in nearly every type of cell in the body

How Many Treatments Are Required?

PRP therapy for hair loss is initially performed as a series of four treatments, spaced one month apart. After completing a series of four treatments, maintenance is recommended with one treatment every 3-4 months.

Ideal Candidates for PRP Hair Restoration

Men and women experiencing symptoms of hair loss or thinning may benefit from this procedure. The best candidates for PRP therapy are those that do not have a history of telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction alopecia or scarring alopecia.

PRP Hair Treatment Results

Results from PRP therapy vary and are typically seen within six months of the first treatment.

Results from PRP are best seen on patients who have hair thinning, but not completely bald spots on their head. It is important to understand that results will vary and there is never a guarantee of success.

A multi-therapy regimen for optimal results may also include nutritional supplementation and laser therapy.
