The Arcola Country Club, founded in 1909 near Paramus, New Jersey, is a members-only country club that also allows for the guests of members. Arcola Country Club owes its current standing to three visionary English-born architects who contributed to its design throughout its history.
Herbert Haydn Barker, from Huddersfield, was working as a professional at the Garden City Country Club when he designed the original 18-hole course after the club opened in 1909. Willard G. Wilkinson was the second designer who altered the course, in 1930, as the Route 4 Highway required course alterations. Robert Trent Jones, Senior, from Ince-in-Makerfield, was in charge of the second redesign in 1950 due to the construction of the Garden State Parkway.
Golfing at the Arcola Country Club
Today, the Arcola Country Club Golf Course spans over 6,872 yards and 18 holes, playing to the par of 72. The primary aesthetic feature of the course is the fantastic panoramic view of the Manhattan Skyline. It is a challenging course with back-to-back Par 5 holes 8 and 9. The best chances for birdy lie on the holes 3 and 13, both short Par 4 holes.
The first nine holes provide a particular challenge as they are compact. Golfers will spend the first part of the game climbing up and down the hills as they move from one hole to the next. It is a wonderful journey, though. Filled with stunning architecture and views, playing on this course is an incredibly rewarding experience. The Front 9 ends with a massive climb on the top of the hill.
From there, you get a beautiful view of what is in store as you get ready to hit the Back 9. The holes have more space to breathe, and the layout of the course is twisty, as holes 10 to 14 hug the boundary line of the course. The presence of several bodies of water presents a unique challenge for golfers, especially on windy days.
Although golfing in/around Paramus has close ties to the more famous Ridgewood Country Club, the Arcola Country Club course is one of the best-kept secrets in the state.
