Why More Retirees Are Having Plastic Surgery
Mar 25, 2015

More retirees having cosmetic surgeryIt is a common misperception that plastic surgery is only for the young. Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that the over-55 crowd is having plastic surgery in record numbers. In fact, at their last estimation, 25 percent of all plastic surgery patients were 55 and older.

Drs. Gary Breslow and Jordan Farkas decided to take a closer look at why this generation is pursuing cosmetic enhancement in growing numbers.

More Time to Treat Themselves

Some people spend years tormented by a particular feature or aesthetic concern (e.g., crooked nose, asymmetrical breasts, saggy abdominal skin) or spend a lot of time desiring a more youthful appearance. The hustle and bustle of raising children and working leaves little time for elective surgery.

Retirement is a great time to undergo well-deserved cosmetic enhancement. Retirees have the time to undergo surgery and recover at a leisurely pace (without the pressure to return to work quickly). Also, retirees typically have more disposable income to spend on elective treatments. If resources are limited, it helps to compare the cost of a one-time procedure to the continual costs of anti-aging products.

Want an Appearance that Reflects a Youthful Spirit

Today’s baby boomers are in better shape and feel more youthful than ever! Physical activities like running, biking and hiking are great for keeping a trim physique; unfortunately, there are no facial exercises to stave off wrinkles and lines. That could be why the most common procedures for the 55-plus demographic are facial procedures. Facelift and forehead lift are especially popular, as they will smooth wrinkles and lines, correct displaced fat and take years off the face’s appearance.

Active retirees that still struggle with unwanted fat and “problem areas” around the body may want to explore body contouring options like liposuction or abdominoplasty.

Improved Confidence on the Dating Scene

Some retirees find themselves back on the dating scene after divorce or the death of a spouse. While good looks are not a requirement for dating, healthy self-image and a good dose of confidence certainly make someone more desirable. Cosmetic enhancement can provide that boost of confidence a new dater needs. Even a non-surgical medical spa procedure can put an extra pep in a dater’s step.

The Bottom Line

There is no upper age limit for plastic surgery, as long as the prospective patient is in good health, has reasonable expectations of the procedure and understands the possible risks. Drs. Breslow and Farkas carefully screen all plastic surgery candidates — retirees and otherwise — during consultation before making a decision about whether to proceed.
