How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting is based on the idea that fat cells are susceptible to cold injury. Developed by two scientists at Harvard University, CoolSculpting treatment exposes fat cells to controlled cooling (the science behind this is known as Cryolipolysis). The freezing temperatures kill the fat cells, which are naturally eliminated from the body in the weeks following treatment. Once the fat cells have been removed from the area, they cannot grow back. Clinical studies show an average of 20 to 30 percent fat reduction per treatment area.

CoolSculpting can be used to sculpt the abdomen, flanks, and both inner and outer thighs. It is most suitable for healthy individuals that are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight and stay in shape with diet and exercise, but have stubborn pockets of unwanted fat.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before your CoolSculpting treatment, you and the Breslow Center’s CoolSculpting expert will identify the area(s) of your body to be treated. This could include your abdomen, flanks or your inner/outer thighs. Expectations will be discussed so you understand the probable outcomes.

You will relax on a treatment table and the CoolSculpting handpiece will be placed on the treatment area. It will draw up a bulge of fat between two cooling panels. You may feel a sensation of intense cold at first, but it will not be painful. As this is happening, you can relax, watch a movie, listen to music or nap. We will alert you if we need you to switch positions to accommodate the handpiece.

Depending on the number of treatment areas, your appointment may take as little as an hour. After treatment, you can immediately return to your normal routine. The treated area may have temporary swelling, redness, tingling or numbness, but these side effects will disappear.

You should start to see noticeable results as your body flushes out the crystallized fat cells. This can happen as soon as three weeks and continue for up to four to six months.
