What to Expect After Lip Injections: Frequently Asked Questions

Medical Spa

Injectable treatments can give your lips the full and attractive appearance you’ve always wanted. Here’s what you can expect during your office visit and in the weeks following the procedure.

What are lip fillers made of?

In the past, doctors used fat cells and collagen to add volume and alter the shape of the lips, but those methods aren’t as common anymore.

Instead, you’ll most likely receive an injection containing hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. It works by attracting and retaining moisture, which is what adds volume to your lips.

At the Breslow Center we generally use Juvéderm products, which are among the most popular and trusted injectables on the market.

Do lip injections hurt?

You will experience a mild pinch when the injection is performed. Some patients describe the sensation as being similar to a bee sting.

You may also feel some soreness and mild discomfort after the injection, although this generally subsides fairly quickly.

Will my lips look unnatural?

The amount of filler required will depend on the current size of your lips and your aesthetic goals. That said, our expert injectors always recommend that a lesser amount be used at first to avoid over-plumping.

What should I expect immediately following the procedure?

When you first walk out of the doctor’s office you may still feel a little numb from the local anesthetic that’s found in most fillers, so don’t be alarmed.

Also, some swelling will probably occur and make your lips look slightly bigger than you’d intended. If you can, just try to relax and take it easy for the first few hours after your injection.

Note that if possible, it’s best to avoid supplements medications that thin the blood (including Aspirin) a few days before and after your injections.

How long does the swelling last?

Most patients report that swelling peaks in the 24-48 hours following the procedure, and that it then begins to subside. Mild bruising is also a regular part of the process.

The soreness, swelling and bruising should be entirely gone within one or two weeks, after which you will see the final results of your injections.

You may wish to schedule a follow-up with your injector at this point to assess your results and address any concerns you may have.

How long do lip fillers last?

Depending on your body type and the kind of filler used, lip injections generally last four to six months, after which new injections will be needed in order to maintain your results.

When you return for your next visit, use this time to speak with your injector about your needs and the experience you had with the last filler. If you were happy with the outcome, you’ll likely get the same type of injection.
