Mommy Makeover
Many women struggle with the impact of pregnancy on their bodies. Although pregnancy affects each woman differently, the severe physical trauma of pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding can have profound negative effects. These include deflated, sagging breasts as well as a lax, distended abdomen with stretched, excess abdominal skin.
In 1970, “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” the seminal guide to women’s health, described these physical changes associated with pregnancy simply as phenomena. At that time, when plastic surgery was not in the mainstream and the techniques were not well-refined, a woman’s principal option for dealing with these changes was to cover up her body with discreet clothing. But now, with the emergence of newer, more sophisticated techniques and the mainstreaming of plastic surgery, women are no longer resigned to feeling self-conscious or resentful about their appearance.
Aimed at mothers, the “Mommy Makeover” involves a constellation of procedures that restore the areas most negatively affected by pregnancy. These usually involve some combination of a breast lift with or without breast implants, a tummy tuck, and liposuction. In 2006, doctors nationwide performed more than 325,000 Mommy Makeover procedures on women ages 20 to 39, up 11 percent from 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
