Acne Treatment

Acne can manifest as pimples or sometimes larger nodules or cysts, and generally surfaces on the face, neck, back, shoulders, chest, and arms. While acne is prevalent in adolescents, it is also common among many adults. If left untreated, acne can cause significant scarring and other cosmetic concerns.

The most common form of acne is called acne vulgaris and is characterized by inflammatory lesions (pimples) that develop when sebaceous glands become obstructed and there is an abnormal proliferation of propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes bacteria).

Until recently, patients with persistent, moderate acne have been treated with skin care regimens consisting only of topical or systemic antibiotics. Recent studies have demonstrated however that Intense Pulse Light therapy can effectively trigger endogenic porphyrins that naturally destroy P. acnes bacteria, and in just a fraction of the time it typically takes for antibiotics to work!
